Design Note: Sign up to the newsletters

I'm a big believer in buying once and buying well—choosing thoughtfully, investing where it matters, and buying pieces you'll still love years from now. Of course, that's not always easy when you're working within a budget, which is why finding value is just as important as finding quality.

As a designer, I spend a lot of time visiting independent design showrooms. Beyond the big-box retailers, there are so many wonderful Australian brands and suppliers creating beautiful products. When I popped into a showroom today, I noticed they were having a floor-stock sale and then remembered seeing the announcement in their newsletter earlier that week.

It reminded me of a simple tip: if you discover a brand or showroom you genuinely like, sign up to their newsletter. It's often the best way to hear about floor-stock sales, end-of-line pieces, showroom events and new collections.

A while ago, I found a floor-stock coffee table for a client that was already saved in their design brief. Because we knew exactly what we were looking for, we were able to purchase it and save them hundreds of dollars. That's the key. Everyone loves a bargain, but one of the biggest mistakes is buying something simply because it's discounted.

The best purchases happen when you've already done the thinking. You've measured the space, considered how you'll use it, understand your style and have a realistic budget. Then, when the right piece comes along, you recognise the opportunity. Sometimes the best finds happen because you were prepared.

I'm also in the process of building the Resources section on my website, where I'll be sharing some of the brands, suppliers and tools I enjoy using. My hope is that it becomes a place to discover great companies, learn a little more about how I work, and perhaps find a few favourites of your own.

IMAGE NOTES

Botanical Artwork at Designer Boys (image left)
Inspired by the botanical illustrations from Captain Cook's 1768–71 voyage, this collection pairs historic artwork with contemporary framing. I loved the balance of heritage and modern styling.

Living Room Display at Molmic (image centre)
I was drawn to the ottomans tucked neatly beneath the coffee table—a simple reminder that beautiful design can also make clever use of space.

Homewares Display at Globewest (image right)
A small ceramic vase that caught my eye. I hadn't realised GlobeWest also offered homewares, making it another great place to discover finishing touches alongside furniture.
